Volunteer Opportunities

Membership Coordinator

Maintain membership files in Microsoft Access database; assist with new member outreach; respond to member inquiries and concerns.  Some computer experience or interest helpful. Time commitment: One to two days per week, 5 -10 hours per week. 

Older American Newspaper Opportunities

  • Newspaper Contributors - Report on news, events and issues from the State House to your local community for MAOA's quarterly newspaper, The Older American. Intellectual curiosity, good writing skills and a desire to become involved in issues are all beneficiala.   Flexible time commitment.

  • Newspaper production - Work with staff to coordinate the production and distribution of The Older American.  Coordinate articles, proofread, do word processing, and/or help distribute newspapers to key community locations.  Learn new skills as we develop our website and our online newspaper.  Flexible time commitment.
     

  • Newspaper Advertising - Assist in soliciting advertising to support the production and distribution of our educational quarterly publication, The Older American. (This position may be performed on a commission basis.) Flexible time commitment.

Policy Advocates

Work in a group with others who share your interest about important issues, such as 1) Employment with the Mature Workers Coalition: an MAOA task force working on creating training and employment opportunities for older workers; 2) Intimate Partner Domestic Violence with SAGE (Stop Abuse, Gain Empowerment): a collaborative of service providers, advocates and consumers dedicated to improving the lives of older women experiencing intimate partner abuse; or 3) Economic Security with the Elder Economic Security Standard Initiative (ESSI): a tool that tells (by county) the amount of income a senior needs to make ends meet.   Learn more about the issues and work with our Policy/Legislative Action Committee to develop policy and action agendas. Flexible time commitment.

 Technology

Computer Skills Teachers -Help seniors access the power of the computer. Teach basic computer skills to seniors in our learning center.  Curriculum and curriculum training is provided. Time commitment: One morning or afternoon per week for 8 week sessions.

 Staffing Support

Word processing and/or Office Support - Support our advocacy and education efforts by helping with important office tasks including answering the telephone, responding to callers, providing staff support for committees and/or help with correspondence, mail merges, member mailings. Help maintain our descriptive materials and website. Time commitment: One to two days per week, 5 - 10 hours.

 Fiscal support - Assist staff by preparing and maintaining records and doing data entry in QuickBooks. Prepare bills for payment. Knowledge of fiscal procedures and computer helpful.  Time commitment: 4-6 hours/month.

  Special Event Support

Provide assistance for MAOA's educational conferences, annual meeting or special events.  Varied opportunities throughout the year including planning, organizing and on-site management.
